How Does Geothermal Energy Work-Overview
How Does Geothermal Energy Work. The term of geothermal came from two words, geo and therme which means earth and heat. Geothermal energy can be defined as the heat energy from the earth. It comes from the magma which is heated by radioactive decay of uranium, potassium and thorium in the earth’s core.
The geothermal is a renewable energy source which produces electricity and generally produces none of greenhouse gasses to the atmosphere. It means geothermal energy is environmentally friendly.
How does geothermal energy work?
Geothermal power plant extracts hot water and run it through pipes placed together with another pipe that contains a liquid with low boiling point. The liquid will turn into vapor and then can be used to run steam turbines that ultimately produce electricity.
There are many types of geothermal power plant such as binary cycle power plants, dry steam plants, hot dry rock geothermal energy, flash steam plants, geothermal heat pump and direct heat.
The binary cycle power plant is a type of geothermal power plant with closed loop system. The working fluid that turn the turbine generator is condensed back into fluid and vaporized again by the geothermal heat and then continue the cycle. With this plant, nothing is emitted to the atmosphere.
When the rock is very hot, the dry steam plants are used. The dry steam plants uses steam form fractures in the ground. The steam is used directly to drive a turbine. Then the turbine spins the generator. Another type of geothermal power plant is flash steam. Both of flash steam and dry steam power plants do emit carbon dioxide, sulfur and nitric oxide in a low level. It is about 5% of the levels emitted by power plant with fossil fuel.
If you ask a question to Icelander about How Does Geothermal Energy Work, they would say; it is very reliably. Iceland takes advantage to use geothermal power to their advantage. It reported about 17% of Iceland’s total electricity comes from geothermal energy.
