Energy Efficient Refrigerators. Refrigerators are not cheap and it is beyond the means of most of us to simply replace our current refrigerator with a newer model with more energy efficiency stars.

Fortunately there are two simple steps can take to make sure that our current refrigerator is as energy efficient as possible.

1. Keep refrigerator full.

The easy and first step is to make sure that it is as full as possible. This step initially seems counter-intuitive. However, every time it is opened all the cold air inside refrigerator falls out of it towards the floor and it will replace with warmer air from the room.

It means that the temperature inside the refrigerator increases sharply and it has to work extra hard to cool the new air that come from surrounding. After you open the refrigerator, it will start humming.

For every cold, space occupying object in the refrigerator when the door is opened there is less cold air to be lost. And, putting the potatoes in the fridge better than in the cupboard will reduce the energy cost of running the machine. The same goes for drink, fruit and so on. When these objects take a while to be cooled, this is easily offset by the energy you save by not losing extra cool air each time you open the door. By placing full bottles of water inside the refrigerator when there is spare space, even if you do not regularly drink cold water, will lighten the load on your electricity bill.

2. Keep the seals always in good condition.

Clean the seals around the door and the surface regularly. The seals come into contact with when the door is closed will make sure that as little cold air is escaping outside as possible. A tiny leak causes a lot more work for the refrigerator, and of course it will add to your power bill.

Energy Efficient Refrigerator-How to Choose

Here are some guides and tips for choosing the right energy efficient refrigerator:

Tip 1: Quick Comparison. Most of the refrigerators today are energy star rated. Find the yellow sticker guide for comparison and then get the one that can consume less on energy.

Tip 2: Choose a Smaller Machine. It is easy to get the bigger-sized machines as they have more storage capacity inside. Choose a smaller machine and store those goods that can easily perish inside. Those processed goods or canned goods can stay in your pantry.

Tip 3: Get one with door separated for its chiller such as that those top or bottom freezers. The separate doors mean less air will escape outside. It will prevent your refrigerator from losing its cool air and further prevents it from working twice as hard producing cool air inside refrigerator.

Tip 4: Choose the refrigerator with extra energy saving functions such as an alarm system or a holiday system. Also, you can set it up to its lowest settings to cut back on cost when you are going on a holiday. Today, some refrigerators have an alarm system when the door is left open for a few minutes.

Tip 5: Choose it with an option of a light switch. When you open the door, some machines automatically turn the light on. Choose refrigerator with a light switch so you can turn it off during the day and you can still clearly see the contents of your refrigerator.
